Applications of laser-based ultrasound to inspection of aerospace components and structures

Laser-based ultrasound is a promising technique for remote inspection of materials, components and structures for aerospace and other applications. This novel technique offers the possibility of measuring large surface areas without the use of water or other couplant, and is thus a rapidly reconfigurable diagnostic tool. In contrast with other techniques, laser-based ultrasound enables the inspection of large, curved surfaces without mechanical scanning, and makes possible inspection under thermal and vacuum life-test cycling. In this presentation we will describe the operating principles of laser-based ultrasound, review its use for the inspection of aircraft structures and show how it can be applied to the inspection of satellite components and structures. We will also compare laser-based ultrasound with another remote technique, airscan ultrasound. Finally, we will discuss recent developments in adaptive laser ultrasonic receivers and the impact of these new devices on aerospace applications.
