Escalation and Management of Network Restoration Mechanisms:Issues and Requirements

The introduction of broadband networks leads to an increasing deployment of high capacity fibre transmission and advanced high speed digital switching systems.However,the increase of functional integration and the concentration of more and more traffic on fewer network elements set high constraints to the network availability.By employing a careful network design and integrating functions that enable the network to restore from network element failures,the network can be made less vulnerable to network element outages.Starting from a description of specific requirements for network survivability,the paper gives a brief description of network restoration methods.Further,the issues related to the interaction between different restoration mechanisms,referred to as escalation,are addressed.The paper concludes with specific issues and requirements towards network management.
