The European Eureka/Celtic project WiSafeCar (July 2009 – March 2012) aims to develop anrneffective service framework/platform and an advanced intelligent wireless traffic safetyrnnetwork between vehicles and infrastructure, with a possibility to exploit vehicle based sensorrnand observation data in order to generate secure and reliable intelligent real-time services forrnvehicles. The participants from Finland, Luxembourg & South-Korea have planned andrndeveloped advanced services within the project. This paper presents the experiences andrnresults of the Finnish pilot services dealing with incident/accident warnings and real time roadrncondition and local road weather information intelligent hybrid wireless traffic safety networkrnbetween vehicles and infrastructure. WiSafeCar considers not only urban areas, but also thernspecial case of operating in rural areas where no high-density base station (road side unit)rnnetwork for V2I communication is available. The hybrid communication of cellular and IEEErn802.11p based wireless vehicular networking has been employed in WiSafeCar, with thernprimary objective of the cellular communication to provide an alternative solution in areasrnoutside of the range of the wireless vehicular network. Traffic safety will be enhanced byrnproviding accurate and timely location based information about incidents, accidents andrnadverse weather conditions. The WiSafeCar application and services provide a platform forrntrue bi-directional Internet-like networking tailored for a vehicular environment.
