Figuring out how to make technology effective for children is an important concern for all educators. Too often, children's technology is designed without involving children themselves in the research and design process. At the University of Baltimore, we have a 3-year NSF grant to explore how we can adapt Allison Druin's cooperative inquiry methods to work with older children-ages 9-13-as design partners. We also suggest that our understanding of children's use of technology can be dramatically improved by contextual inquiry that involves children themselves as research partners-both as members of the research team and as members of the design team. This presentation will discuss the methods and challenges involved in 1) working with children ages 9-13 as design partners to adapt Allison Druin's digital library for older readers 2) doing contextual inquiry into children's reading-recreational and school-related-working with children as research partners Our focus will be on how others can use or adapt our methods.
