The influence of indoor air humidity on ocular symptoms and eye blinking for young adults when performing visually demanding tasks on a laptop computer

The purpose of this study was to determine whether two different relative humidity (RH) levels had any influence on ocular symptoms and eye blink rate for healthy young adults while performing visually demanding tasks on a laptop computer. We found that for several visually demanding tasks many subjects experienced more ocular symptoms in a relatively “dry” RH setting compared with a situation were the RH were increased with humidifiers. However, for both the “dry” and “wet” RH situations most ocular symptoms significantly worsened after approximately one hour of visually demanding VDU work. The eye blink rate during visually demanding visual display unit (VDU) work was low for both RH situations. There was no statistically significant difference in eye blink rate between the two RH situations.
