Pyrolysis gasoline, a by-product from the cracking of gas and liquid feedstocks to produce ethylene, can significantly impact an ethylene producer's operating flexibility and overall profitability. Raw pyrolysis gasoline contains reactive components, as well as acidic species, that can lead to fouling and corrosion during the recovery and treatment of the stream. If not managed correctly, the value of pyrolysis gasoline production can be offset by increased maintenance and processing costs, as well as reduced operating flexibility. Producers can maximize the benefit of pyrolysis gasoline production by managing the impact this stream has on the ethylene process, as well as on downstream processors. This includes early assessment of the py-gas stability, combined with appropriate operating best practices and chemical treatment programs designed to control corrosion and fouling.
