A Tribute to John S. Matteucci

After receiving his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the California Stale Polytechnic College at San Luis Obispo in 1960, a twenty-two year old John Matteucci joined Optical Coating Laboratory, Inc. (OCLI). He immediately became a key contributor in the advancement of coating process technology. His major efforts were on multilayer antireflection coatings, which were widely used for windows, lenses, and other advanced optical components. Later, John developed magnetic recording films, and various solar and thermal control coatings for the space shuttle. In 1979, John then led OCLI and Flex into the new technology of Roll Coating. It was here that he made his greatest impact, being in charge of building the large Beta 1 and Beta 3 roll-coating machines that are making security pigments for banknotes around the world, including the new US banknotes.
