GAS SUPPLY FOR BP’S LNG BUSINESS IN TRINIDAD

BP has a gas business in Trinidad that is delivering 18 Gscm/a (1.7 billion scfd) in mid 2003. The proportion of that gas used to supply the Trinidad LNG business is 11 Gscm/a (1. billion scfd). Trinidad, the largest supplier to the US market, is exporting 10 MTA of LNG into the Atlantic Basin market and BP will supply 75% of the gas. This is expected to increase in the future with further expansions. BP is involved in all aspects of the LNG business from “sand face to burner tip”. BP’s merchant LNG business in Trinidad commenced with the groundbreaking Atlantic LNG Train 1 project. This set a new paradigm for LNG plant in terms of scale and unit cost. In order to supply gas to successive LNG trains, BP has developed upstream resources and expanded an infrastructure of pipelines and terminals. Exploration supplements the reserves base to supply this gas and further upstream developments will be added through the life of the gas contracts.rnThe ability to manage the whole gas supply chain reliably and efficiently is fundamental to this business. The supply chain is characterized by the integration of a diverse collection of technical and commercial skills. This paper describes BP’s supply chain in Trinidad and the techniques that have been developed to ensure the necessary capacity is in-place, in the most cost efficient manner, to support the successive gas contracts that feed the LNG trains. The context of the gas business in Trinidad is also outlined, tracing the origins of BP’s LNG business and subsequent expansions.
