In the last twenty years, plant management has become aware of the costly problems associated with fugitive material-problems such as personnel safety hazards, increased cleanup costs, shortened component life, increased regulatory attention, increased downtime, lost production, and reduced efficiency. Consequently, private industry and governmental organizations alike have been looking closely at the problems of conveyor belt cleaning. These groups have devoted more research into how cleaners work and how to improve their performance. The following is a brief summary of recent developments in belt cleaning system research and design.
