Outcome of Modular Press-Fit Acetabular Components in Total Hip Arthroplasty - A Comparative Clinical Trial Using Polyethylene and Alumina Liners

The purpose of the present investigation was to provide treatment outcome information for total hip arthroplasty patients who received a modular acetabular component inserted with an alumina linear, and to compare the results to those of patients who received the same acetabular component inserted with a polyethylene liner. Forty-nine consecutive patients (20 hips) scheduled for primary total hip arthroplasty treatment were included in the randomized clinical trial. The first group of 25 hips received a modular press-fit cup with a polyethylene liner and an alumina femoral head. The second group of 25 hips was operated on using the same cup, but an alumina liner was inserted instead of polyethylene. The mean clinical follow-up (49 hips, 98percent) was 5 years (range 4.5 to 5.5 years). The mean preoperative Harris hip score was rated 5. At the time of follow-up the mean score has improved to 94.5. In the present series no hip required revision, and there was no radiographic evidence of aseptic loosening at follow=up. No sign of cup migration were observed. At an average of 5 years postoperatively, the acetabular component inserted with ana lumina liner functioned well overall and patient satisfaction was high. Clinical and radiological results do not contrast with those achieved using the same cup with a polyethylene liner.
