The recent development and luminous characterization of three kinds of white LEDs, based on blue and near ultraviolet (nUV) LEDs and phosphor blend technologies, are reviewed. The commercially available white LED which consists of two luminescence components from blue LED and yellow YAG:Ce~(3+) phosphor has several technological problems. In order to overcome its disadvantages, red, green and blue (RGB) or orange, yellow (O and Y) GB multi-color phosphor materials excited by near UV LED at 382-410 nm has been prepared and evaluated by means of optical spectroscopic studies. The nUV white LED technology in conjunction with phosphor blends can offer superior color uniformity, high color rendering index (Ra>90) and the excellent light quality.
