As a revolutionary development, change of electric drive technology for locomotives from DC drive to AC drive is brought by high-power power electronic device and advanced control schemes. Owing to possessing the merits of low harmonic current component fed to the catenary, unity power factor, bidirectional flowing of energy and an excellent dynamic performance, and so on and so forth, four-quadrant converter (4QC) is applied to AC drive locomotive as line-side rectifier. As interface circuit of AC source and DC link, four-quadrant converter takes charge of maintaining the DC voltage of middle DC link, suppressing harmonic wave of AC side by making AC current as a sine wave, making power factor approach 1, the working condition of which directly impact on the stability of drive system. The inductance value for 4QC is vital to the performance of the rectifier. To meet the performance of current tracing and limit of the maximal modulation ratio, a scheme to design the inductance parameter of AC line for 4QC is presented in the paper. The results of simulation verify the feasibility and correctness of the proposed method.
