To improve both the luminance and luminous efficacy, a high Xe gas mixture is used in the SM-PDP. Both the experiment and the simulation results indicate that the higher Xe content improves the static margin, the luminance per sustaining pulse and the luminous efficacy, all at the same time. Because the SM-PDP is an opposed type of discharge, the increase of the firing voltage at high xenon is much smaller than for the surface type of PDP. Therefore the SM-PDP is most suited to exploit the improved performance of high xenon content.
