Stone carvings from the fifth and sixth century provide further evidence. Sherman Lee has noted that the sides of the stupa pillar in the middle of one of the Yungang caves feature, in sandstone relief, scenes of the Buddha's life including Maya's divine birth. Dorothy Wong has mentioned that a stele dating to 525 from Xingyang, between Luoyang and Zhengzhou, contains an image of Maya birthing the Buddha from her left armpit. Eugene Wang has written about several late Northern Wei steles with friezes containing pictorial narratives of the Buddha's life including images of the white elephant's visitation of Maya and her abnormal lateral birthing of her prodigious son-an event that he calls the "celebrated nativity scene."By the Tang, the day of the Buddha's birth was celebrated as a festival.
