AN INTEGRATED ACUTE CENTRAL VENOUS CATHETER AND PERIPHERALLY INSERTED VENOUS CATHETER

The catheter assembly includes a peripheral venous (“PIV”) portion that facilitates vascular access. The catheter assembly includes an elongate catheter body defining a first lumen, and includes a CVC portion, a transition portion, and a PIV portion. The PIV portion defines a relatively smaller diameter, tapered tip, and a lumen configured to receive a needle. The needle extends through a needle access opening disposed through the sidewall of the catheter body, through the PIV lumen, to a point beyond the distal end of the catheter body. The clinician accesses the vasculature using a needle and PIV segment. The needle is then removed and a guidewire is advanced into the vasculature through the lumen and PIV portion of the catheter body. The CVC portion is then advanced into the vasculature over the guidewire and self-expands the insertion site as the transitional portion enters the vasculature.
