Describes a fuel cell system (10) for a motor vehicle with a voltage generating fuel cell (12,14),wherein the fuel cell (12, 14) comprises an anode current connected to an anode circuit (40), a cathode current connected to a cathode supply and an ion-conducting membrane separating the cathode from the anode; at least one anode exhaust pipe section (62),connected to the anode circuit (40); at least one cathode exhaust section (32);where the anode exhaust pipe section (62) and the cathode exhaust pipe section (32) flow into an exhaust pipe section (64); and a control unit (60) for controlling and/or regulating the operation of the fuel cell system (10). It is provided that a test line portion (76) is arranged parallel to the exhaust pipe portion (64), wherein in the test line portion (76) a test chamber (78) is formed, in which an ignition device (84) is arranged.
