The device (1) has a control device (3) controlling a fuel cell system (2) in a normal operation mode and a boost-operation mode in which temporarily more power is delivered from the fuel cell system than in the normal operation mode. An operation range of the normal operation mode lies under a power limit in which the fuel cell system is operated in an unstable manner and/or operated only within short term in a destruction and/or damage-free manner. The boost-operation mode is converted in the operating range beyond the power limit by controlling the fuel cell system. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fuel cell device.
