A metronome device for teaching rhythm, comprising generating a musical rhythm pattern, providing a means for detecting rhythm strikes 13, such as a tap pad, of a trainee, a means for sensory stimulation of the trainee when notes of the musical rhythm are played, such as speakers or lights, and a time window setting means set in synchrony with the notes of the rhythm pattern, where a strike within the time window supresses playing of a note, but if no timely strike is detected, a note will play, wherein a strike within predetermined periods of the note will supress the playing of the subsequent note, but if either no strike or more than one timely strike is detected, the subsequent note will play, and where after the played note, a predetermined number of further notes will be played before notes can be supressed again
