The invention relates to a method for maneuvering a motor vehicle (1). In the method, the maneuvering process of the motor vehicle (1) is carried out by a user (3), who is positioned outside of the motor vehicle (1) in the region surrounding the motor vehicle (1), using a portable communication terminal (4), and signals are exchanged between the communication terminal (4) and the motor vehicle (1) for this purpose. The surroundings (3) are detected by an optical detection device (7) of the portable communication terminal (4) during the maneuvering process, and the state of attention of the user (3) with regard to the user's (3) monitoring of the maneuvering process is determined on the basis of the detected information, wherein the maneuvering process is at least interrupted if the actual state of attention is lower than a target state of attention.
