Method for detaching a portion (4) from a flat glass or glass-ceramic element (2) along a provided separation line (21) dividing the glass or glass-ceramic element (2) into the portion to be detached (4) and a remaining main part (3), wherein:– filamentary damage (20) is produced side by side along the separation line (21) in the volume of the glass or glass-ceramic element (2); and-filamentary damage (20) is caused by laser pulses (12) of a laser (10), whereby the material of the glass or glass ceramic element (2) is transparent to the laser pulses (12); and-the points of impact (13) of the laser pulses (12) on the glass or glass-ceramic element (2) are moved over its surface (22) along the separation line (21); and-after the filamentary damage arranged side by side along the dividing line (21) has been produced (20), material of the glass or glass-ceramic element (2),which is located in the area of the portion (4), is subjected to a phase transition and brought to volume reduction so that the portion (4) detaches from the main part (3) along the dividing line (21) at the filament damage arranged side by side, where at least the main part (3) is preserved as a whole.
