This disclosure provides an electrified vehicle control using a battery charge state and an efficiency strategy. A vehicle and a control method include a traction battery, a temperature sensor, a current sensor and a voltage sensor associated with the traction battery, an electric machine supplied with power by the traction battery to provide the vehicle with propulsion power, and a controller, configured to control at least one of the electric machine and traction battery in response to a battery charge state (SOC);estimated using a battery model having parameters that include a first resistor connected in series with a second resistor and a capacity connected parallel to the second resistor. The battery model parameters shall be set during vehicle operation using a Kalman filter and shall be adjusted to a vehicle power-on in response to a change in battery current exceeding an appropriate threshold and/or in response to: that any of the parameter values exceeds a contiguous limit, reinitializes to new values.
