When a fluorescent whitening sample is illuminated sequentially with a plurality of excitation light Ik having different spectral intensity distributions, the spectral intensity distribution R (Ik, λ) of the sample emission light emitted from the fluorescent whitening sample and the standard illumination light Id From the spectral intensity distribution Id (λ), an approximation B′f (Id, λ) of the fluorescence spectral emissivity coefficient with the standard illumination light Id is obtained in the following step. A spectral intensity distribution Rf (Ik, λ) of fluorescence is obtained from a spectral intensity distribution R (Ik, λ) of each excitation light Ik (first step). The spectral intensity distributions Rf (Ik, λ) of the fluorescent light due to the respective excitation lights Ik are linearly combined with a given weighting coefficient Wk, and an approximation R′f (Id, λ) of the spectral intensity distribution of the fluorescent light due to the standard illumination light Id is obtained by an equation. (Second step: $ 11). From the approximation R'f (Id, λ) and the spectral intensity distribution Id (λ) of the standard illumination light Id, an approximation B′f (Id, λ) is obtained by an equation (third step: # 12).
