The invention relates to a method for automatically calibrating a rocker-type sensor module (1) comprising a position or acceleration sensor, via which a position of the sensor module (1) is measured as an angle (ɣ) relative to a fixed spatial direction, and outputting an output signal which depends on whether the measured angle (ɣ) is less than or greater than a switching angle (ɣS). The method comprises the following steps: setting the output signal to a first output value if the measured angle (ɣ) exceeds the switching angle (ɣS); setting the switching angle (ɣS) to a value corresponding to the measured angle (ɣ) minus an "off" free pivot angle (ΔO), as long as the value of the measured angle (ɣ) continues to increase; and setting the output signal to a second output value if the measured angle (ɣ) falls below the switching angle (ɣS); setting the switching angle (ɣS) to a value corresponding to the measured angle (ɣ) plus an "on" free pivot angle (ΔI), as long as the value of the measured angle (ɣ) continues to fall. The invention also relates to a sensor module (1) which is designed for carrying out a method of this type.
