A method and system are provided for generating test results for a sample using an adaptive Newsons filter. One method is to detect during examination of a sample having values for at least one characteristic of the events that are closer to at least one value of at least one parameter of the Newson's filter than to values for at least one characteristic of another portion of the events. and selecting a portion of the events that have been made. The method also includes obtaining an output of an output obtaining subsystem for a sample of events, classifying the events in the sample based on the obtained output, and determining that one or more parameters of the Newsons filter are determined based on the results of the classification. determining if it should be modified. Then, the Newsons filter or the modified Newsons filter may be applied to the results of the examination of the sample to produce final examination results of the sample.
