A method of forming a pouch, comprising: adhering an oxygen scavenger to a pouch material, wherein the pouch material is impermeable to gas and moisture; enclosing a consumable item within a pouch material; and joining the ends of the pouch material to form a sealed interior cavity. The sealed interior cavity contains a consumable item and at least one first portion of an oxygen scavenger.
