Embodiments of a backscatter communication system and methods of using the system are disclosed. The system may include a first short range wireless communication device (SRWC), a second SRWC, and a backscatter node. The first SRWC may include a processor and memory that stores a plurality of instructions executable by the processor, the plurality of instructions including: determining first and second sets of connection parameters for a radio frequency (RF) signal; Determining a selected set of link parameters for the backscatter communication, the selected set of link parameters being one of the first or second sets of link parameters; Sharing the selected set of connection parameters with a second SRWC device; and after the backscatter communication using the selected set of link parameters, iteratively updating the first and second sets of link parameters over the RF signal and iteratively redetermining, dividing and updating the selected set of link parameters accordingly.
