A parasitic reaction such as generation of hydrogen at a negative electrode may occur under operating conditions of a flow battery or another electrochemical system. Such parasitic reactions may alter the pH, the state of charge, or both, of one or both electrolytes of the flow battery, adversely affecting the flow battery's performance. An electrochemical balance adjustment cell can realize balance adjustment of an electrolytic solution. An electrochemical balancing cell suitable for being placed in fluid communication with both electrolytes of a flow battery comprises a first chamber containing a first electrode and a second chamber containing a second electrode.
