The invention relates to a method for operating a vertical axis wind turbine, wherein the wind turbine comprises: - a rotor; - a vertical shaft; - a generator; and - a support structure, wherein the rotor is connected to the generator via the vertical shaft, wherein the support structure supports the rotor, vertical shaft and the generator, and wherein the method is aimed at controlling the generator to prevent the rotational speed of the rotor and/or vertical shaft and/or generator from obtaining a value in a range in which undesired resonances of the support structure may be excited.
