The present invention makes it possible to analyze and express as well as to synthesize arbitrary odors from combinations of relatively small numbers of odors, as with colors from three primary colors. "Primary odors" that correspond to primary colors have yet to be identified, and therefore the present invention provides a method and device that make it possible for the abovementioned analysis, synthesis, etc. to be performed, not by presetting definite primary odors, but by selecting, from a set of odors, partial sets of odors that, when combined, can approximate another odor as well as possible.
