A template-assisted method for 2D nanosheet synthesis involves growing a 2D material on the surface of a nanoparticle substrate that serves as a template for nanosheet growth. The 2D nanosheets are then released from the template surface, for example through chemical intercalation and exfoliation, purified, and the template can be reused.
