The invention relates to a safety module (100) for safe drive control of a drive system (107) in an automation system (200), said safety module (100) being designed for: receiving, by means of the protocol master (101), encoder data transmitted by the encoder unit (111) to the drive unit (109) on the basis of an encoder protocol; relaying the received encoder data from the protocol master (101) to the safety logic (105) and to the protocol slave (103); checking the relayed encoder data by the safety logic (105) for compliance with predetermined safety criteria relating to the operation of the motor unit (113); transmitting the relayed encoder data by the protocol slave (103) on the basis of the encoder protocol in corresponding data packets to the drive unit (109); and stopping the operation of the motor unit (113) by the safety logic (105), if the encoder data are recognised by the safety logic (105) as not complying with the predetermined safety criteria. The invention further relates to a drive system (107) and an automation system (200).
