A specific crosslinker, alkali metal bis(styrenesulfonyl)imide monomer, is used in the synthesis of non-fluorinated and non-PEO based single ion conducting copolymers. The copolymer meets the security and cost requirements for use as a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE). They are promising alternatives to standard liquid electrolytes in alkali metal ion batteries due to their improved security and flammability characteristics. The copolymers described are polyvinylsulfonate or acrylate vinylsulfonate block-copolymers. A preferred acrylate monomer is methacrylate, and a preferred vinylsulfonate is styrene sulfonate. The copolymers are prepared by radical polymerization of vinyl sulfonates with cross-linkers, and optionally acrylates, in particular by radical photopolymerization using functionalized bis(acyl)phosphane oxide (BAPO) as photoinitiator. Also described is the use of copolymers as solid polymer electrolytes in lithium ion batteries.
