A specific cross-linker, an alkaline metal bis(styrenesulfonyl)imide monomer,isused in the synthesis of single ionic conductive copolymers that are non-fluorinatedand non-PEO based. Such copolymers meet the security and costsrequirements to be used as solid polymers electrolytes (SPE). They arepromising alternatives to standard liquid electrolytes in alkaline metal-ionbatteries because of their improved security and inflammability properties.Thecopolymers described are either polyvinylsulfonates or acrylate vinylsulfonateblock-copolymers. Preferred acrylate monomers are methacrylates andpreferred vinylsulfonates are styrene sulfonates. The copolymer is prepared byradical polymerization of the vinyl sulfonate and the cross-linker andoptionallythe acrylate, in particular radical photopolymerization using a functionalizedbis(acyl)phosphane oxide (BAPO) as photoinitiator. Also described is the useof such copolymer as solid polymer electrolyte in a lithium ion battery.(see formula I)
