Provided is a process for the preparation of particles comprising rhenium (VII) sulfide, which process comprises providing a reaction solution comprising perrhenic acid or a salt thereof, a Bronsted acid other than perrhenic acid and a sulfide source, and heating the reaction solution comprising perrhenic acid or a salt thereof, a Bronsted acid other than perrhenic acid, and a sulfide source by exposure to microwave radiation to convert the perrhenic acid or the salt thereof to particles comprising rhenium (VII) sulfide. As a further embodiment, composition are provided which comprise a plurality of particles comprising rhenium (VII) sulfide, said particles having a volume average particle size, of 0.05 to 5 µm, a unimodal particle size distribution and a polydispersity Ð in the range of 1.0 to 2.5.
