The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of alkali metal sulfide nanoparticles in which a carbothermal reduction of alkali metal sulfate nanoparticles is carried out. In addition, the present invention relates to the alkali metal sulfide nanoparticles produced by the process according to the invention, and their use as cathode material, in particular for an alkali metal-sulfur battery. The invention also relates to an alkali metal-sulfur battery comprising a cathode comprising alkali metal sulfide nanoparticles of the invention.
