The present invention is a system and method for automatically detecting one or more depression symptoms of a social media user. The method comprises collecting (402) social media content from one or more social media platforms associated with social media users through a data collection module (202); categorizing (404) the collected social media content to build a profile of the social media user, calculating a psychological intensity value after evaluating one or more sentences of the social media content through a user depression detection module (204); quantifying (406) a depression level of the social media user and identify if the social media user requires at least one of immediate medical attention and monitoring based on the quantified depression level through a depression monitor and alert module (206). A system therefore is also provided.
