The present invention relates to a method for promoting the growth of biomass mixed with a liquid in a bioreactor (11; 21) using ionizing radiation. The following method steps are used in this case: a) exposing a first partial volume (15; 25) of liquid in a bioreactor (11; 21) to ionizing radiation, said first partial volume (15; 25) comprising at most 10% of the liquid volume (12; 22) in the bioreactor (11; 21); b) mixing a first partial volume (15; 25) of liquid exposed to ionizing radiation with a second partial volume of liquid in a bioreactor (11; 21) not exposed to ionizing radiation; c) repeating method steps a) and b) several times, wherein each partial volume of liquid in the bioreactor (11; 21) is exposed to a total radiation dose of up to 50 Gy as a statistical average.
