An automated calibration system (200) of a camera system (202, 203, 204, 205) of a vehicle (100) is provided, which identifies unwanted image components that can be traced back to the vehicle in the camera image while the vehicle is traveling. The knowledge of the location of these unwanted image components in the camera image can then be used to adapt the insertion of a virtual vehicle model or to adjust the stitching geometry to hide extraneous objects. In this way, the representation of the image of the camera system while driving can be improved.
