Compositions for efficiently extracting uranium from wastewater, seawater, other water sources, etc. are provided. The composition can include a functionalized porous organic polymer that is functionalized with one or more uranium-bonded moieties, eg, has multiple amidoximes or amidolazone groups covalently attached to it. Compositions can include covalent organic frameworks, porous aromatic scaffolds, and various porous organic polymers, especially those having a hierarchical pore size distribution over a range of constant pore size. The composition may be covalently linked to a functional group such as amidoxim or amidorazone. The hierarchical pore size distribution can be determined based on at least 60% of the pore size in the pore size range having a pore volume of at least 0.01 cm3 g-1 in the pore size distribution at 77K. Methods of making the composition and using the composition are also provided.
