Patient monitor 12 includes a display 14 and sensors 20, 22, 24 that read the vital signs of the subject. In the early cardiovascular warning scoring cEWS method, subjects are classified using multiple cardiovascular degradation classifiers 52, 152, 54, 56, 58, each trained for various types of cardiovascular degradation. . The cardiovascular degradation classifier operates on a set of inputs that characterize the subject including at least one cardiovascular parameter 42 and at least one respiratory parameter 44, such as a tidal volume read by the airflow sensor 24. Early cardiovascular warning scores for various types of cardiovascular degradation are output on the patient monitor display. The empirical myocardial ischemia classifier 52 can be combined with at least one additional ischemic score generated by applying a set of rules 160 or a physiological model 162.
