Method for regulating an internal combustion engine (101) in a motor vehicle (102), with which fuel consumption and pollutant emissions can be adapted to influencing variables in order to achieve an optimal degree of efficiency with changed influencing variables, with the following method steps: a) Input of a current engine speed (nmot ) and an instantaneous actual torque value (Dist) in a consumption map (203), b) assignment of the instantaneous engine speed (nmot) and the instantaneous actual torque value (Dist) to an ideal consumption value present under ideal conditions at this instantaneous engine speed (nmot) and this actual torque value (Dist) (Vid), c) assigning the ideal consumption value (Vid) and an actual consumption value (Vmom) to a provisional torque reduction value (D_red_vorl) and d) reducing a torque setpoint (Dsoll) of the internal combustion engine (101) by at most the provisional torque reduction value (D_red_vorl ) to a second torque setpoint (DSoll) , at which it is to be expected that the fuel consumption (Vmom) and the pollutant emission are below the respective limit values until the ideal consumption value (Vid) is available again.
