Improvements in Apparatus for Treating Liquor Obtained from the Washing, Scrubbing, Cooling or Condensing of Carburetted Water Gas and other Gases in order to Separate the Tar from the Water.

12,994. Thuman, F. July 18. Decanting and settling.- Apparatus for separating tar from tar liquor obtained in the manufacture of carburetted water gas, oil gas, coal gas, &c. The tar and water are first separated by systematic settling, the tar emulsion obtained is next heated to cause the tar and water to separate into two layers, and, lastly, the water obtained therefrom is separated from any tar it contains i n a supplementary settling- apparatus. The Figures show a tank 1 into one end of which the tar liquor enters through an inlet 1a. The main port i o of the tank is separated into compartments 2 by partitions 3 reaching from the top nearly to the bottom, and communicating with each other through openings 4 arranged about midway up alternately and at opposite sides. By this arrangement the upper or watery layer remains fairly still, as also does the lower or tarry layer, the middle layer flowing through the tank. The tarry layer collects in a sump 6a, and is forced by the pressure up a tube 7, and thence passes by a tube 8 to the heater 9, through which it slowly passes and wherein it is heated by heating-pipes 10. The tar and water separate, the former falling and then r.sing up the ascension pipe 12 and passing away from the apparatus, while the latter, which rises, overflows through the tube 13 to a small supplementary settling-apparatus 2x, similar to the main one 2. The clear water overflows from the last compartment 2x by the tube 14 to the clear-water compartment 6, into which also the clear water from the main settling-apparatus overflows through the tube 5, and from which the water overflows through the outlet 15. In cases where some of the tar in the liquor is lighter than water, adjustable surface overflows 16 may be introduced into some of the compartments 2, the light tar passing by the tubes 17 and 8 to the heater.
