PICT:0478191/III/1 In evaporating or distilling apparatus comprising a casing enclosing sets of large discs rotatably mounted on horizontal shafts extending transversely to the gas flow so that portions of the discs pass alternately through gas and liquid, several shafts 5 are arranged with their axes side by side in the same horizontal plane, and the lower wall 2 of the casing is shaped to conform closely to the contours of the discs 6. The upper part of the casing may be similarly formed. For fractional distillation the casing is subdivided into two or more chambers by partitions and hydraulic seals through which the liquid passes, vapour being led off at the top of each chamber. The discs rotate slowly and may be corrugated concentrically, fitted with spiral or circular fins or ribs, or provided with comb-like scrapers. The edges of adjacent discs may overlap, and the liquid may be heated internally or externally. The liquid enters through a liquid seal 15 and the gas passes in the opposite direction. According to the Provisional Specification, series of parallel plates are given a slow oscillating or jigging motion into the gas and liquid spaces alternately.
