Liquids and solids, treating with gases.-In an apparatus for bringing gaseous or vaporous bodies into intimate contact with liquids, bodies in solution, or solid bodies or particles in suspension in liquids, the gases or vapours pass through a travelling reticular or chain-like diaphragm which is continually coated or saturated with the material used. The diaphragm a passes round rollers d, and is driven by a drum c, in a triangular casing b, the base of which contains the material used. If required, the top of the diaphragm, which is covered by a hood h, may pass through a liquid seal. In this case, two additional rollers are used, and the diaphragm passes under the drum, which is situated in the liquid. Between the diaghragm and the walls of the casing, travelling elevators g, consisting of endless chains or openwork bands, and fitted with buckets g', are arranged to cover the breadth and depth of the diaphragm ; the lower ends of the elevators extend into recessed parts of the casing and serve to stir and mix the liquid. The driving-drums of the elevators and diaphragm may all be fitted on one shaft, or coupled together, to facilitate working. The apparatus may be divided into units, each of which may contain two such chambers, as shown, divided by a partition. The units may be coupled by valves so that any number may be employed. The gas enters at t, passes through the diaphragm and through apertures between the chambers, and finally escapes from the apparatus. In a modification, the length of diaphragm used may be increased by passing it over an idle drum beneath the driving-drum ; two extra rollers may then be employed in the liquid. In a further modification, two or more separate diaphragms may be used.
