Annealing.-Iron, steel, manganese, bronze, o r other metal, is toughened, hardened, or annealed by heating it in a bath of mercury and allowing it to cool slowly, an electric current being passed through the bath while the metal is under treatment. The mercury may be contained in a metal receptacle a, provided with terminals h, and enclosed by means of two covers b, c and two sets of screws f, e, which respectively pass through the cover c and clamps. The ends of these clamps engage with recessed bosses g on the receptacle.
