9148. Sleigh, H. L. May 3. Signalling or communicating with driver.-Relates to means for communicating with, or conveying instructions to, the driver &c. of a private carriage or other vehicle. The indicator, Fig. 2, is arranged on the dashboard &c. in view of the driver, and is operated by pushes a, b, c, &c., Fig. 6, inside the vehicle. The instructions or directions &c. are marked on a card g, carried by an arm h' pivoted within the casing f, the arm h1 having a projection h3 adapted to engage with one or other of the stops i on the armatures j of the electromagnets k1, k2, k3, &c., to stop the card in position to expose the desired instruction through a sight aperture in the casing. The electromagnets k1, k2, k3, k4, k5 are suitably connected to the pushes a, b, c, d, e, so that, when a push is operated, one or more of the electromagnets are energized to permit the movement of the card to the corresponding indicating- position. Fig. 6 shows a suitable arrangement of wiring, the operation of the first, second, third, fourth, or fifth push energizing one, two, three, four, or all of the electromagnets k1-k5. A bell or other audible signal m may be employed to call the attention of the driver. The indicator is re-set by the push rod n', n, which is adapted to engage the estension h4 of the arm h1. Instead of employing pushes, a single switch lever and push may be arranged to work over a series of contacts corresponding to the indicators required. The instructions may also be marked on a dial, and separate indicating-cards be arranged behind the dial, so that one or other of the cards, when released by an electromagnet energized by the corresponding push, drops into view through a slot contiguous to the corresponding indication on the dial.
