12,854. Philipp, O. June 5. Shearing ; riveting. - Relates to hydraulic presses, shears, riveters, &c. in which a high pressure is produced by forcing a spindle into the cylinder. Fig. 1 shows the invention as applied to a press. Within the cylinder G, which is attached to the base A by columns B, is a plunger or ram D. A hollow screw E, working through a nut or crosshead F, passes into the cylinder, and is actuated by a hand-wheel G provided with a water tank G1. A collar H on the screw is adapted to engage a crosspiece or plate J fixed across the top of the plunger to raise the same. A valve K, Fig. 2, controlled by springs k working on guide-pins k1, is arranged at the bottom of the screw. When not working, the plunger is held in the raised position by the screw, the valve K being open owing to the engagement of the pins k1 with the cross-bar J. In operation, the spindle E is screwed downwards and the plunger D falls. As the spindle continues its travel, the valve K is closed, and, as the water cannot escape, the pressure can be increased as desired. The spindle E is screwed upwards to relieve the pressure and to raise the plunger, the water from the cylinder being forced back into the tank G'. The tank G1 may be closed and preliminary pressure derived from a main or by compressed air or steam. The spindle E may be moved by a piston operated by steam, compressed air, or water.
