23,858. Dudgeon, H. A. Nov. 25. Calculating - apparatus.-Relates to apparatus for measuring the area of skins of leather and like articles of irregular figure. A row of hinged arms D1, bearing back against stops D3, holds a row of separate wheels E, arranged side by side almost in contact with a rotating roller B, and, as the leather passes between the roller and the wheels, cords E2, wound up by the hubs of the wheels, draw weights E3 with rollers up inclined arms E5 which extend from a shaft C, The turning-movement of the weights about the shaft is balanced by a spring h, pulling a shorter arm at one end of the shaft, and an index is provided either by means of a pressure gauge 1 with a sensitive reservoir 4 under the short arm or by means of a rack - and - pinion attachment. A friction pawl P prevents the measuring - wheels from running back, until it is lifted by a handle 02. Means are, however, provided to allow a return movement of eachmeasuring - wheel equal to the amount of movement imparted to the rollers by the thickness of the substance measured.
