An Improved Apparatus for Fixing and Stretching Flexible Materials, especially adapted for use in Embroidering.

21,083. Thompson, W. P., [Rumpf, M. H.]. Sept. 27. Embroidery.-Consists of an improved frame for fixing and stretching flexible materials especially, adapted for use in embroidering. Each side of the frame is a roller or tube, Fig. 1, formed with an undercut recess into which the material is inserted by a bar 2, and which is so shaped that the stretching pull causes the bar 2 to clamp the material against the undercut edge 4 of the recess. Fig. 3 shows a section of the improved frame in its application to an embroidering-machine. When the material is to be moved to a fresh position, the clamping-rollers 5, 7, which are geared together are turned back a little and the material clamped in a supplementary roller 9. The material is then released from the rollers 5, 7, and the roller 9 brought to the position of the roller 5, which becomes the supplementary roller next time. By means of this frame, the embroidery can be continued over a large area with exact register of the pattern. Figs. 1b, 1c, show modifications of the clamping-rollers.
