Pumps rods.-Relates to a method of tensioning reciprocating rod systems, ropes, chains, and the like, and is stated to be specially applicable for rods or ropes operating single-acting pump pistons. Fig. 1 shows the application to a lift pump. The upper and lower ends of the rope or other flexible link a are connected by a rod to the pistons f, g working in the cylinders b, c. These cylinders have the same stroke and diameter, and are connected to an accumulator h or other source of fluid pressure. The flexible link is thus always kept taut without increasing the resistance to the piston of the pump. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the link a is connected to a wheel instead of directly to the piston. In large pumps, the tension is taken off the link during the upward motion and put on again on the downwards stroke by the upper piston being made to race in front of the lower one.
